In today’s society rape is a mere joke. From rape slurs made by peers to the horrific witticisms aired on popular cartoons the torment for a rape victim never ends.
Shows such as Family Guy, American Dad, and Futurama make cruel remarks corresponding to popular rape myths. The Family Guy episode "Friends Without Benefits," which aired on December 9th, 2012, gives the perfect examples of repeated rape jokes used in this particular episode. Quagmire giving Meg roofies, saying he should "rape it forward," and the houseplant raping another plant that had been given roofies. In American Dad Rodger always seems to be giving the wrong type of sex advice. In the 2013 Halloween episode Rodger explains to Stan in order to get a serial killer all hyped up “you have to appeal to their rappie side.” Seth McFarlane has been criticized a countless amount of times for is abrupt and vulgar vocabulary, however, nothing has been done.
As years pass we as a society are becoming more open to sex. It is discussed between parents and children. We are excepting the human body and its needs as a natural process, however this has many consequences. With such openness television networks and video games are becoming much more provocative. They are crossing a line that should not be crossed. Unfortunately rape myths have the potential to become much worse.
